Olga Cortadelles

Engraved in the heart

In his engraving and screen printing workshop, since the beginning of his artistic practice, Olga Cortadelles (Agramunt, 1974) has experimented with the printing on natural fabrics and all kinds of materials. For the recording artist, the tissue, like paper, becomes a second skin of the body. Forms and lines such as scriptures and wounds that are inscribed in the body. Common symbols and forms in the collective imagination acquire, at the hands of Olga Cortadelles, a subtle and lyrical transformation fruit of their own personal memory. Thus, from the figures of a cuticle, the heart emerges as a multiple synthesis of life, tragedy and human comedy.
As Olga Cortadelles himself claims in a text about this work:

«HEART as a certain attitude-feeling or willingness to face the decisions we adopt. The fragility of human beings, the ductility and volatility of our feelings and ideas, but also the empowerment or the ability to control the individual's own life that makes decisions, is expressed through the HEART and the four personal motives:
Feathers, to fly and free yourself from anguish.
Thorns of roses, like a protective armor that delimits the border of the interpersonal access.
Bears-sweets, sweet to the palate and pleasant to the touch.
Rusty nails, which cause damage and produce a lasting wound.
It is from these attitudes-feelings-feelings that built different hearts and their corresponding patterns and images that make up my work. "

What's in the heart of things? What have we recorded in the heart? Matter and memory, blood and forgetfulness. Maybe also feathers, rosebushes, bears-treats and rusty nails, as Olga Cortadelles says.
